Skype is a little piece of software that lets you make free calls over the Internet. According to their website, they are revolutionizing the telecom world by allowing users to make superior quality voice calls to other Skype users for free and to landlines and mobiles worldwide for the price of a local call.
I have to say, that statement is correct. We tried Skype out for a few days, then decided to make the move and switch our traditional phone system over to Skype. The quality is far superior over traditional phone lines.
Skype Pros
Skype’s benefits are clear to anyone that is cost-conscious. Free Skype to Skype calls, free calls to the US and Canada and low rates for international calls, etc. For a very small fee, you can upgrade and get a phone number with voice-mail: Only $38/year…..now that’s cheap.
Skype is more than just another VOIP service. The application has a built in Instant Messenger with chat and file sharing capability. Did I mention video calls, conference calls and call forwarding? There are also Skype plug-ins for your browser of choice.
Skype Cons
The benefits of Skype really to out-weight the cons. The disappointments worth mentioning are:
- No call or video recording
- No caller id when placing a call to a traditional number
I also think that there will be a paranoia with Skype that is similar to cycle we had with e-mail, on-line shopping and instant messengers. As more people start to use Skype, the perceptions will change. Skype may have a few disadvantages, but these can easily be resolved.
